Odonata / Dragonflies & Damselflies
Global use as food:
Adults, especially larger species, were widely eaten in Bali, Indonesia. They were commonly caught using a stick about 1.5 ft long with a stiff wire or reed attached to one end. At the free tip of the wire or reed, a globule of sticky latex of certain trees is affixed. The stick is swung around, causing the globule of latex to swing around in a circular motion, and the odonates dart at the globule, thinking it prey, and become stuck to it. They are grilled, or boiled, or steamed.
Nymphs are also eaten and cooked in the same manners. Nymphs were collected from ponds and boiled to eat in Java, as well as in Nagano Prefecture, Japan.
