Ehretia anacua (Terán & Berl.) I.M. Johnst.

Synonym: = Gaza anacua

Common names: Anacua, sugarberry, sandpaper-tree, knockaway, anaqua, manzanita, manzanillo, tlalahuacate

Location in Texas: S, SE, & C TX; common (often ornamental) in Travis Co.

Form: tree, up to 50 ft. tall with 2 ft. diameter trunks.

Flowers: April (white).

Food

Fruits – edible, red, and sweet (Ohlendorf et al. 1980:603). The fruits were eaten by the Mexican Kickapoo (Latorre and Latorre 1977:344).

Material

Wood – used to make ladles by the Mexican Kickapoo (Latorre and Latorre 1977:343).

Experimentation

I have eaten the fruits on various occasions. They are sweet and tasty.

The tree is quite easy to identify, as its leaves feel very similar to sandpaper.
