Hi y’all,
I will be teaching an introductory flintknapping lesson at a park. This class is appropriate for complete beginners but may also be helpful for early beginners and even some intermediates. We will start with finding rock, basic concepts, then practice with hammerstones. I will move on later to cover the use of billets and pressure flakers. At the end of the class, we will pack up then have the option to go down to a creek bank to look for knappable stone, and perhaps artifacts!
I will bring one large canvas cloth to catch flintknapping debris. I will have tons of rocks to share for practice, but I encourage you to try to bring your own for a pre-emptive first lesson: finding the right rocks!
I will have plenty of spare tools for practice and will tell you how to make or buy your own.
I can’t guarantee you will come away with an arrowhead, but I think we can get everyone to make a simple handaxe or chopper, and definitely some sharp flakes.
A chair, bucket, or something is recommended to avoid sitting on flakes if you plan on knapping.
It will be outdoors, so dress accordingly. Long pants, closed-toe shoes, gloves (I like gardening gloves), and, most of all, eye protection are the recommended safety gear for flintknapping. I usually have extra gloves and safety glasses.
Flintknapping is inherently dangerous, and all participants agree to take part at their own risk of injury, including possible severe injury. After many years of knapping, I still commonly get cuts and bruises. I take no responsibility for injuries or damages occurred as a result of attending these events.

Date / Time: Sunday, November 15th, 1:00-4:00 PM.
Cancellation / refunds: the walk will proceed except in the case of extreme weather or other extenuating circumstances. Otherwise, I will offer refunds up to 3 days before the walk. If you have to cancel after that, your ticket can be applied to the next class you can make.
